A RACCOON RESEARCH COLLECTIVE

The Scrap-Heat Intelligence Lab

A secret research lab built and run entirely by raccoons.

Tucked high above the university computer science department, inside the warm, buzzing ventilation shafts, lies The Scrap-Heat Intelligence Lab (S.H.I.L.): a secret research collective founded, built, and operated entirely by raccoons. Powered by a daisy-chain of recycled laptop batteries and illuminated by glowing, scavenged fiber-optic strands, this secret haven turns e-waste into a state-of-the-art research facility.

Discarded aluminum hubcaps double as whiteboards, tin cans serve as high-frequency acoustic sensors, and a hidden Wi-Fi antenna taps directly into the university’s supercomputing network. Here, urban trash is transformed into pure computational infrastructure.

Every member of S.H.I.L. is a raccoon. Each brings a different kind of curiosity—and a pair of very determined paws.

The Visionary Leader

Commander Sterling “The Mask” Snout

Strategy, diplomacy & midnight provisions

Draped in a tiny vest fashioned from a discarded tweed jacket patch, Sterling is the strategic brain keeping S.H.I.L. running smoothly. Equal parts tactical project manager and diplomat, he translates wild research ideas into actionable foraging missions.

Sterling ensures the lab remains stocked with leftover pizza crusts for late-night crunch sessions while orchestrating high-stakes stealth operations to evade the campus janitor. He commands the lab with a flick of his ringed tail and a twitch of his whiskers, firmly believing that raccoons will be the ones to solve artificial general intelligence.

The Mathematical Theorist

Professor Fourier “Squeaks” Lagrange

Geometry, proofs & beautiful questions

A pure mathematician who wears a single monocle harvested from a broken camera lens, Fourier is obsessed with the hidden structures behind complex systems. While other raccoons look for shiny objects, Fourier searches for mathematical elegance.

He covers every smooth surface in the lab—from garbage bin lids to flattened pizza boxes—in dense dry-erase equations, exploring geometry, spectral bounds, and the unexpected connections between ideas. His signature quirk is pacing back and forth and chattering furiously whenever a matrix fails to be positive semi-definite.

The Machine Learning Architect

Ada “Tensor” Wash-Paw

Learning systems, experiments & ingenious hardware

Ada is the coding genius who builds and trains the lab’s machine learning systems. True to raccoon nature, she insists on meticulously washing her paws in a bowl of distilled rainwater before touching her custom mini mechanical keyboard, which she soldered together from scavenged Cherry switches.

At midnight, Ada secretly borrows the university’s idle GPU clusters to bring the lab’s most ambitious experiments to life. She optimizes gradient flows, debugs CUDA code faster than any human researcher on campus, and turns the others’ most improbable ideas into working prototypes.
